Blackheads and whiteheads are both types of comedones, which are clogged hair follicles. The main difference between them lies in whether or not the pore is open or closed. Blackheads, also known as open comedones, occur when the pore remains open and the sebum and dead skin cells oxidize, giving them their characteristic dark colour. Whiteheads, on the other hand, are closed comedones where the pore is closed and the sebum and dead skin cells remain trapped beneath the surface of the skin.
Blackheads are typically more visible than whiteheads due to their dark colour. They often appear on areas of the face that have a higher concentration of oil glands, such as the nose, forehead, and chin. Whiteheads, on the other hand, may be less noticeable as they are not exposed to air and do not oxidize like blackheads do.
